What Licenses to use?
We’ve recently added a more complex ‘import image’ dialog, asking the user a lot more questions then just the filename. One of the questions is to specify the license of the image. The number of options is more or less the same as on wikipedia. But this brings up the question again, what license should OMDB use? We’ve been discussing this topic for quite some time now, trying to choose between GFDL or CC.
We would choose the CC License right away, if it wasn’t for the huge amount of Wikipedia-Content that we want to use in OMDB. There are a lot of useful information on Wikipedia regarding movies, people, genres, etc. Ignoring all of these contents and building new contents from scratch does not really make sense. But on the other hand, if we are going to use these contents, we need to license our contents under the terms of the GFDL as well. Thats not what i would expect of a free license.
I wonder what will happen, if a people start copy/paste content from Wikipedia to OMDB, not knowing that it would be illegal, if we do not use the GFDL. I’m not sure if the “normal user” is aware, that free content does not equal free content. Maybe we should give it a try and find out.
